Fitzroy History

Milkbar.com.au is not really a traditional local history of Fitzroy (as it is more concerned with understanding electronic scholarship and globalisation) however it is worth acknowledging the numerous valuable historical studies that individuals and groups have made within the area.

  • The most comprehensive history of Fitzroy was written in 1989.
  • Fitzroy: Melbourne's First Suburb, Cutten History Committee of the Fitzroy Historical Society, Hyland House Publishing, Melbourne, 1989.
  • "This bibliography shows that Fitzroy has frequently been in the cockpit of change. Local Historians often claim that that their work is a microcosm of a larger, more important picture. Such a claim is easily sustained by Historians of Fitzroy"
  • Carole Woods, Fitzroy: A Descriptive Bibliography, Newtown Papers No.1, Ethal Margaret Ewing Trust, 1989.
  • To contact the Fitzroy Historical Association send 'snail mail' to:
  • The Convenor, Fitzroy Historical Society PO Box 180, Fitzroy 3065
  • Also, Tony Birch is an Historian and writer who has recently completed a Ph.D. thesis on Fitzroy at the University of Melbourne (2002). This is to be published as a book.
  • Another recent project (November 2001) is called Fitzroy Stories (by Lorissa Romensky and Barbara Scarlett, photography by Warren Kirk). This is an oral history project with some of the older residents of Fitzroy. It was commissioned by The Yarra City Council; the transcripts and CD-ROM are available from The Fitzroy Library on Moor Street (underneath the old Fitzroy Town Hall)
  • Here is a reference to Fitzroy and its History in the Australian Places project from Monash University in Melbourne

  • Also worth reading in relation to Fitzroy's history is:
William Logan, The gentrification of inner Melbourne : a political geography of inner city housing , Qld. : University of Queensland Press, St. Lucia, 1985.

Authored by Craig BellamyŠ 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003
