Streaming Media Links

A YEAR ON THE WING - an online documentary
Here is another interesting site within the on-line documentary genre. It is visually quite impressive, however it is perhaps far too close to a broadcast production model.

Long Journey : Young lives
Here is an interesting site within the on-line documentary genre. It makes extensive use of streaming media and oral interviews (similar to milkbar.com.au).

A Day in the Life... Somié Village
Here is an ethnographic project about the day in the life of a village. It uses ethnographic techniques and applies them to on-line new media.

The Social Role of Ashanti Women
Here is an interesting project that explores multimedia design as an ethnographic tool through focussing upon Ashanti Women.

MERLin
Here is a research unit from British Columbia in Canada. It is called the Multimedia Ethnographic Research Lab and applies ethnography approaches to on-line streaming media.

An Ethnographic Study of Oak Park
Here is a innovative ethnographic study from Jay Ruby of Temple University in the US. It is quite similar to milkbar.com.au in terms of the streaming media and methodological approaches. Well worth keeping an eye on this project.

From Lunchroom to Boardroom Project - Oral History Search
Here is an interesting Australian project from the University of Queensland Library. It makes available through searchable transcripts, the oral interviews from a history project.

AWORC WENT2000 - WENT Online Onsite
Here is an site with a number of interviews of women who attended a technology and networking conference for Asian women. There are a number of streaming media interviews and artefacts that have been incorporated into the site in an innovative way.

StreetScapes: Smith and Fitzroy Streets
This site was originally designed to be a 24hr live netcast, but the site still contains some interesting photos (and a short experimental film with weird music). Brought to you by the Fitzroy based Toysatellite (Andrew Thomas and Andrew Garton).

Servidor de Video
This is a large video archive (in Spanish) that utilises indexing features designed specifically for on-line delivery.

Alpha Centauri's Universe: Earth Image Archive - Earth Video Archive Index
Some good examples of streaming media from an American planetarium. Check out the video of Miami getting flattened by a rare space hurricane.

The Bit Screen - Screening Room
An Internet film site.

Freespeech.org
This site acts as a portal for independent video content. It provides an interesting critique of the mainstream press, especially during periods of crisis.

GlobalizeThis.org
A good example of what can be done in terms of informing the public through steaming media and the nets' self-publishing model. Breaking the Bank is a independent 74 minute documentary about the IMF and World Bank protests in Washington DC in April of 2000.

Toysatellite
Toysatellite is a Melbourne based production house with a decisively non-commercial focus. The group have been involved in a number of on-line productions. Go to the link to the hear her voice project at the Museum of Victoria.

Apple - QuickTime
FAQ's from Apple on QuickTime.

Apple - Products - QuickTime

The Bit Screen - Films Made For The Internet
An innovation of Nora Barry, the bitscreen is a site dedicated to films that are only made for the Internet and not repackaged from other mediums (like television or film). No remediation here.

The well-know Wax Web by David Blair is housed at IATH at the University of Virginia. It is a 90 minute feature film that can be dissected, reassembled, or simply played from beginning to end. Totally written in HTML, this mammoth work is well worth the investment in time.

ABC Broadband
Check out the ABC Broadband site. It mostly is a remediation of film and television, meaning that these clips were made for another medium and the Internet is simply being used as a delivery mechanism. This seems to be on of the major criticisms of RealPlayer; this is that it has been appropriated by media executives who aren't really interested in pushing the boundaries of the medium.

vog
Check out Adrian Miles of RMIT VOG pages (video log). There are some great pointers to and examples of some of the possibilities of QuickTime.
