This is a photo of Hajime Toyashima, Australia's first prisoner of war captured on Australian soil. The photo is with Les Powell who captured Hajime on Bathurst Island after the bombing of Darwin on 27 February 1942. The photo was taken eight days after the first raid on Darwin. Hajime is believed to have wandered around on Melville Island until he was captured by the local 'Tiwi' Aborigines, then taken by Canoe to Bathurst Island.

The photo (bottom) is of Hajime's downed Zero Aircraft that crash landed on Melville Island. The plane is now at an aircraft museum in Darwin.
